Solventless: Live Rosin/ Full Melt
Flowers are harvested to be immediately frozen, except the way in which they are extracted dictates more careful protocols as not to break the delicate trichome heads*. Everything about high-end solventless extraction and its myriad of sensitivities requires more handwork and artisanship than any other extraction method. Once harvested and frozen, the flowers are walked into cold-room and placed into a bath of ice and filtered water of ideal ratios. From there the flowers are gently hand-paddled, stirred, or machine washed. This light agitation and cold water encourage the tiny trichome heads to fall off into the ice bath and finely porous bags. From there, the trichome heads are collected in different microns or “U’s”. Each size of trichome heads have different qualities and some are far more prized than others. Typically, the most prized heads range from 70u – 120u. the 25u – 45u are considered lower grade, and there are levels of quality within these grades i.e., first wash or early wash to mid wash to late wash. Not all late washes are less than either. The extractor must have the experience – which takes hundreds, maybe thousands of washes - to be capable of separating out the high-grade from everything else, and to know what and how to blend for specific outcomes. Once the wash, collection, and separation are complete the ultra- clean trichome heads are slid into the freeze dryers to remove all the moisture left over from the wash. One can air-dry them in a cold-room as well, but that takes longer, and the verdict is still out whether the quality is better, worse, or equal to. Once dry, the live heads are prepped in small mesh wraps to be pressed into Live Rosin unless the extractor found the rarest form within the heads “Six Star Full Melt” in which case the Six Star heads are kept separate, sealed, and remain frozen all the way through packaging to the consumer. A rare treat indeed.
